Past the small talk
There's a version of getting to know someone that's really just an exchange of résumés: job, hometown, hobbies, a story about a trip. You can do it for weeks and learn nothing that predicts how they'll love you.
Deep questions skip the résumé. They ask about fear, the past, and what someone actually believes about themselves — subjects most people are quietly waiting to be asked about and almost never are.
A warning that is also the point: these questions only work traded. Asking them without answering them is an audit. Answer first when you can — going first is what makes it safe for the other person to be honest.
You're not asking for the story. You're asking what the story turned them into — every past relationship leaves a rule behind, and you'll be living with the rules.
Most relationship behavior that looks confusing from the outside is fear management from the inside. Knowing what someone protects tells you what will happen when things get hard.
You don't date the person; you date the direction. Someone's relationship to their own growth — real, performed, or absent — is one of the strongest signals you can get before meeting.
The last three are meta-questions: they test the channel itself. What you learn is less the content of the answer than whether this person can say true things when it would be easier not to.
Fair questions
Sometimes — and that's the feature. Someone who bolts at a real question before the first date was going to bolt at a real moment after the tenth. The people worth meeting tend to lean in; being asked something true is rarer than it should be.
Go first. "I'll tell you the most honest reason my last relationship ended if you tell me yours" lands completely differently than a bare question. Trade, don't probe — and keep it to two or three deep questions in one conversation.
Compatibility questions check whether your lives fit — money, kids, cities, schedules. Deep questions check who the person is underneath the logistics. You need both; this list is the second kind, and the structured version of both is what the Dating MOU asks.

The conversation before the first date
The Dating MOU asks what you'd both actually want to know — answered apart, sealed until you've both finished, then compared before the first date.
